SOVAR contributes to $572,884 in funding for Professor Mario Leclerc’s project at Université Laval

SOVAR is proud to announce that Professor Mario Leclerc of Université Laval’s Department of Chemistry has received $432,359 in funding from Ministère du Développement économique, de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation (MDEIE) as part of its Development and Transfer Assistance Program (PSVT) under Technological Development Support. The PSVT contribution combines with $140,525 from project partners St-Jean Photochimie (SJPC) and SOVAR to bring total funding to $572,884.

This funding will be used to further a technology developed by the team of Professor Leclerc working on printable materials for efficient solar cells, based on the exceptional properties of a new polymer that incorporates a molecule called TPD. This molecule absorbs light and generates electrical energy and has among the best yields worldwide. The project’s goals are to increase the energy conversion efficiency of this polymer to 9.5%, which would constitute a new world record for polymer solar cells, and to use it to develop a semi-industrial production process. These polymers will help curb reliance on other electrical energy sources such as fossil fuels and thereby help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
