Dr. Yvon Cormier of Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine receives $682,677 in funding

SOVAR is proud to announce that Dr. Yvon Cormier of Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine has received $546,142 in funding from Ministère du Développement économique, de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation (MDEIE) as part of its Development and Transfer Assistance Program (PSVT) under Technology Development Support. The PSVT contribution combined with $136,535 from the other partner in the project, Sporect, brings total funding to $682,677.

This funding will be used to further a technology developed by Dr. Cormier’s team: stimulation of innate immunity by a compound of bacterial origin. The goal is to develop a new preventive approach to fighting respiratory infections by stimulating the organism’s innate immune response. Dr. Yvon Cormier’s team has shown that a preparation composed of a nonpathogenic lysate of actinomycete bacteria administered directly into the airways stimulates innate immunity, thereby conferring nonspecific protection against viral and bacterial respiratory infections. This protection is induced within 24 hours of administration and remains effective for at least 7 days.

This funding was a result of the close cooperation between SOVAR, Dr. Cormier’s team, and Université Laval’s Vice Rectorate of Research and Innovation. SOVAR will provide scientific and commercial follow-up on the project.
