Professor Mario Fafard receives $125,000 I2I grant

SOVAR is proud to announce a recent Phase 1 Idea to Innovation (I2I) program grant in the amount of $125,000 to Professor Mario Fafard of Université Laval’s Department of Civil Engineering and Water Engineering, holder of the NSERC/Alcoa/Hydro-Québec Industrial Research Chair. The grant is the result of close cooperation spanning several months.

This new funding is to demonstrate the mechanical feasibility and reliability of a new connector design for Hall-Héroult type electrolytic cell anodes and spur the interest of a potential primary aluminum production industrial partner.

This new connector design will lead to a reduction in the amount of energy needed to produce aluminum, resulting in lower production costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The design will provide a competitive edge to Canadian aluminum smelters that adopt this new technology.

The I2I program is very competitive. It is specifically aimed at technologies with solid scientific underpinnings and high commercial potential.
